Knowing that they must last a lifetime or three of roadtrips, Mulholland carefully selects the materials for its bags, apparel, and accessories for their quality and durability. Chosen from the finest tanneries, our leathers are vegetable-tanned, a more artisanal and environmentally friendly process than chrome tanning. Our hardware and other materials are selected to stand up to just as many miles.

Lariat is the signature Mulholland leather - we've used it since we made our first handsewn bags. Lariat is a light tan nubuck, a split leather with a slight nap similar to, but superior in durability to, suede. The break-in and wear process make it our most unique leather: Lariat will darken in color to a honey brown and burnish to a smooth texture. We suggest avoiding the use of leather conditioner for the first year to eighteen months you own Lariat. Once the nap in the leather has reached a smooth finish, applying leather conditioner a few times a year will keep you leather from drying out.

Latigo is our most widely-used leather. Latigo is a full-grain leather developed for saddlery and has a highly polished texture brought out by a glass cylinder spun at high speed. Latigo is available in three colors: Stout (a dark brown reminiscent of a strong cup of coffee), Bridle Tan (a deep caramel brown), and classic Black. We also use Latigo to trim Endurance and waxed canvas bags. Each color will soften in hand and deepen in character with age, especially with application of leather conditioner a few times a year.

Endurance is a vinyl coated canvas embossed with a pebble texture. It is slightly lighter in weight than our leathers and practically maintenance-free. It will not fade, stretch, or crack. Endurance is available in Black fabric with Stout trim and Hazel fabric with Bridle Tan trim. You can clean Endurance with a mild detergent.

Waxed canvas is a heavy-duty basket-woven cotton fabric dipped in paraffin for strength and water resistance. Unlike a waxed canvas jacket, our bags will not need to be reproofed. Waxed canvas is available in Tan with Bridle Tan trim and Olive with Stout trim. Sponge clean.
Mulholland chooses its hardware and linings to be as durable as its leathers and fabrics. Hardware is solid brass or nickel-plated, zippers are sourced from fine European and Japanese manufacturers, and bags are lined in high-denier nylon or duck canvas. Straps are leather with a stretch-proof nylon core, heavy canvas, or automotive webbing.
American Exotics made in our Berkeley workshop:

Our North American bison hides have a unique deep grain and are rugged beyond comparison. Each bison piece tells a story about the revival in American manufacturing and the revival of the bison population from near-extinction to the hundreds of thousands of animals alive today. Our farm-raised bison is available in Peanut Brown and Black in our Bison Built 1882 collection.

Our strong and pliable bullhide is used on all High & Mighty pieces and available in eight colors from bold to classic.

Deerskin is one of the most coveted leathers in the industry for its unrivaled softness combined with incredible durability. For our deerskin collection, we've carefully selected a handful of silhouettes and two colors: understated Moccasin Tan with Russet Latigo trim and classic Black.

Notoriously difficult to raise, American Alligator skin is perhaps the most sought-after leather in the world. Each piece has a completely unique tile pattern that cannot be imitated. Once you've chosen from any of seven colors, any bag or wallet in our line can be custom made for you. Please call Customer Service for pricing quotations on alligator items. It is sure to become an heirloom.
